I’ve lived in France, Italy, Germany, Colombia, and Argentina, with additional extended stays in Norway, India, Thailand, Portugal, and Turkey, and weekend trips to cities across several continents.

With few exceptions, I’ve used Airbnb to book stays in each of these locations.

Over the years, I’ve developed a set of 14 key questions that I ask every potential Airbnb host prior to booking their home. The goal of publishing them is to help you avoid the clever tricks of hosts and book the best Airbnb every time.

The problem with Airbnb profiles

Airbnb profiles do a great job of introducing the amenities, accessibility features, and reviews of each listing on the platform. In my experience though, the information on a listing doesn’t tell the full story.

Images usually display the apartment at its best, not current, and reviews don’t account for those guests who had poor experiences but didn’t want to negatively impact their host's Airbnb business with a lukewarm or worse review.
